George Hawkes Downtown

The George Hawkes Downtown Library is the crown jewel of the Arlington Public Library System. It was recently renovated and has lots of different things to offer patrons.

The children's section on the first floor is very nice and a great place to take kids anytime. They have several different toys out for kids to play with in the general children's area. The Discover wall has some comfortable seating options, a tunnel to crawl through, and the R is both a magnetic wall and small reading nook. There are plenty of books for kids to read as well as a few computers for children. There is also a self-checkout just for the kids section. Kids are welcome to roam the children's section and do not need to be silent. Screaming and running are not accepted, but we have all been there when our child throws a tantrum so there is grace and understanding given. There are two family bathrooms in the children's section that include diaper changing stations.

The play room is open for parents who want their children more corralled. The door remains open to prevent little fingers from getting smooshed, but having only one exit point makes it easier for parents to keep the kids in the room. The play room has a wall of interactive toys along with several table where kids can play with provided puzzles or bring their own activities.

Children also love watching the automatic book return. You simply put your book in the slot and then watch as the book is sorted into the appropriate bin.

There is a teen section available on the second floor that has a few study rooms and a hang out area where only 13-18 year olds are allowed. If you need a book from the YA section, you may grab it, but the librarians will ask you to leave if you are not in this age range. They do have some video games and consoles available to be used in this area if you ask a librarian.

The Makerspace is also a fantastic offering of the library. Every machine is free to use for library cardholders, except the 3D printers which cost $.20/gram of filament. You bring in your materials and are welcome to use the different machines, and the librarians will assist you with any questions. You are welcome to bring children in with you as long as they remain under your supervision and do not run around touching things that could hurt them.

Food is not allowed in the library and drinks need to have a lid. There is a rooftop garden on the 3rd floor where you are welcome to eat snacks. There is also a lovely area outside the main entrance to the library.

The librarians offer lots of programs for all ages. There are usually several programs going on throughout the week for children including storytime and STEM activities. You can follow this link for the programming calendar. *The library takes a programming break in the months of May, June, and December so there are normally few programs offered these months* There are several of their programs in the calendar under events. The summer reading program is also a great way to get kids excited about reading.

The parking deck across the street is free on the first floor and a half. There is also lots of free street parking around the library, although some of it is back-in only so be aware.

The George Hawkes Downtown Library is an excellent place to take young children. There is lots to explore at this library!
